"All the earth continued to be of one language and of one set of words" (Genesis 11:1)
Jehovah gave the first human Adam, the ability not only to speak but also to coin new words and thus expand his vocabulary. (Genesis 2:19, 20, 23) What a wonderful gift this has proved to be! It has even enabled mankind to communicate with their heavenly Father and to praise his glorious name. During the first 17 centuries of human existence, everyone spoke just one language, havine "one set of words." Then came the rebellion of Nimrod's day. Contrary to Jehovah's instructions, disobedient humans gathered at what later came to be called Babel, determined to remain in one location. They started to build a massive tower, not to give Jehovah glory, but to "make a celebrated name" for themselves. So Jehovah confused the original language of those various tongues. Thus, they were scattered over all the surface of the earth.—Genesis 11:4-8.
(Watchtower issue: 8/15/08, 5:1, 2)
Have you ever noticed how anytime Satan incites humans to take a course of action in opposition to Jehovah, (like what happened with Nimrod and the Tower of Babel) Jehovah always takes the situation and flips it around into something that will eventually turn out in his favor,...in harmony with his original purpose? When Jehovah confused the languages which caused the people to be scattered and prevented them from continuing to build and work together in unity, there was a much bigger plan "in the works" which has stretched down to our day.
Think about how the same language barrier between the nations exists right now, and has continued to prevent unity between the different national groups, (even when working together for a united purpose is in the best interest of their own people).
But Jehovah already knew that this situation would provide another opportunity for him glorify his name and prove his power by accomplishing what mankind has never been able to accomplish on their own throughout all the centuries since Nimrod's day. He has united his people by the "pure language" so that they have been able to work together in unity, despite the fact that national barriers and disunity still exists among the majority of mankind.
It's very interesting to see how Jehovah's word always comes to pass, even when it stretches over long periods of time and when we don't understand how it will be fulfilled.
"Remember, please, the word that you commanded Moses your servant, saying, ‘Should YOU, for YOUR part, act unfaithfully, I, for my part, shall scatter YOU among the peoples. When YOU will have returned to me and kept my commandments and done them, though YOUR dispersed people should happen to be at the end of the heavens, from there I shall collect them and certainly bring them to the place that I have chosen to have my name reside there.’" (Nehemiah 1:8, 9)
"For then I shall give to peoples the change to a pure language, in order for them all to call upon the name of Jehovah, in order to serve him shoulder to shoulder.’"
